In 2013, Debbie Been, a GZ psychologist, recognised an overlap between excessive smartphone use and the addictions she worked with. It has since become her specialism. Debbie Been is a GZ psychologist and cognitive behavioural therapist (VGCt®). With 25 years of experience in mental health and addiction care, she developed a method for people who have lost control of their smartphone use. It combines cognitive behavioural therapy and ACT. It focuses mainly on why you use your screen so often, because that is where the key lies, not in the smartphone itself. We need to 'get to grips with discomfort'. In November 2025, her book Slimmer dan je smartphone was published by Boom Uitgevers. It is not an argument for digital abstinence, but a well-founded approach for anyone who really wants to change their phone use. The book is aimed at adults and parents and carers. For businesses, schools and care institutions, she offers: - Talks on the psychology behind excessive screen use, its effects and ways to gain a better handle on it - Workshops where teams learn practical steps towards healthier digital behaviour - Masterclasses for professionals working with clients or employees affected by this issue No quick fix. But an approach that works. Bookings and information: www.debbiebeen.nl
