Speak, Host or Engage: which role fits your event?

ByJerre Maas · · 1min read

Start with what the audience needs to do. Listen to someone’s story, hear a conversation between others, or get to work themselves. Those are our three categories: Speak, Host and Engage. Individual roles are tags within each category.

Speak

The speaker brings the content. Think of a keynote, talk, inspiration session, masterclass or after-dinner speech. The audience listens to their story and experience.

Host

The content comes from speakers, panellists or guests. An event chair, moderator, debate chair, host, panel chair, discussion chair or interviewer connects them and keeps things on track. A gala host belongs here too.

Engage

The audience takes part. Think of a workshop, training session, quiz, working session, brainstorm or interactive session. Quiz hosts and facilitators belong here because the participants do the work.

What needs to happen on stage?

Choose the main purpose. Someone can combine categories, but agree beforehand who brings the story, who hosts and what the audience will do.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an event chair and a moderator?
An event chair is responsible for the whole day: the opening, transitions, timing and closing. A moderator leads a single discussion, such as a panel or Q&A.
What's the difference between a moderator and a debate chair?
A moderator aims for depth and understanding. A debate chair brings opposing views into focus through motions, opposing sides and short rounds.
Can an event chair also moderate a panel?
Yes, that often happens. Do discuss it beforehand, as it needs extra preparation with the panellists.
When should I choose a presenter rather than an event chair?
For a fixed format involving a show, music, technical production or a livestream, such as a gala or awards ceremony. An event chair is a better fit for a conference focused on in-depth discussion.
