Role
Hire an event chair
An event chair brings separate sessions together into a coherent day. They keep track of time, make connections between speakers and ask the question the audience is reluctant to ask. A good event chair is there for the participants, not the limelight. Always arrange a planning call. It lays the groundwork for the day.

Questions about the event chair
- What exactly does an event chair do?
- They open and close the day, introduce speakers, keep time, involve the audience and summarise. In a well-run programme, you notice their work most in the pacing.
- How much preparation does an event chair need?
- Allow for one or two planning calls, contact with the speakers and a running order. For a full-day event, half a day to a full day of preparation is normal.
- Is an event chair the same as a presenter?
- Not quite. A presenter works within a set format. An event chair guides the content and keeps the main thread clear.
- Not sure which role you need?
- Read the difference between an event chair, moderator, debate chair and host.
